The Original Legacy Black Foxes are former dancers making up the majorette line of the Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band. The group was created in 1971 by its Founder, Dr. Margaret Penn Sherrod, then a twenty year old student at Prairie View A&M University, who had a vision for a majorette line that would bring class and sass to each electrifying performance. The Black Foxes distinguished themselves from other groups with their posture, poise, and prolific talent; showmanship was their calling card, from the flashing cloak drop on the sideline at the start of their show, to their signature circle and high kicks, at the end.

This group has performed for millions of fans and viewers from around the world at events that included the George W. Bush Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D. C., the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, the Disney Parade in Orlando, Florida, the Honda Battle of the Bands in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, the Dallas Cowboy Thanksgiving Day Game Halftime, featuring Beyonce, the Texas A&M University vs. University of Miami Hurricanes Halftime, broadcast over ESPN, at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, and the annual State Fair Classic between Prairie View A&M University and Grambling State University, to name a few. The Black Foxes were also commended in articles by the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.

Fast forward, today, this dynamic group of former Black Foxes have pivoted their way into countless successful careers and personal lives, that include law, medicine, pharmacy dentistry, veterinary medicine, nursing, education, real estate, entertainment, and public service, among others. The Original Legacy Black Foxes count among their rank and file, fourteen doctorate degrees, with others in progress.

Even though technique is an essential dance skill, it is by no means the most essential by the Original Legacy Black Fox standards, that distinction goes to the more important consideration and demonstration of “character.” Character being defined by the respect that each dancer has for herself, fellow dancers, the University, and society. It is a demonstration of behavior that epitomizes the best of ambassadorship that any student can carry out on the University’s and the State of Texas’s behalf.
